Bitcoin casino tax reporting vs traditional casinos IRS Form W-2G differences for US players

Hit a $3,200 win at Ignition last month using Bitcoin deposits/withdrawals. Traditional casinos auto-generate Form W-2G for wins over $1,200, but crypto casinos seem to handle this differently.

Ignition didn't send any tax forms, and I'm tracking everything manually in a spreadsheet. My accountant says Bitcoin gambling wins are still taxable income but the reporting burden shifts to the player since most crypto casinos don't issue W-2Gs.

Anyone know if this is standard across all Bitcoin casinos? Do places like Wild Casino or BetOnline issue any tax forms for crypto wins, or are we all just self-reporting based on blockchain records?

Been Bitcoin-only since 2019 across multiple sites. Never received a single W-2G from any crypto casino - Cafe Casino, Super Slots, BetOnline, none of them.

My tax guy explained it's because most crypto casinos operate offshore and don't have the same IRS reporting requirements as US-licensed venues. The $1,200 W-2G threshold still applies to your taxable income, but you're responsible for tracking and reporting it yourself.

I keep detailed records of every deposit/withdrawal with timestamps and USD conversion rates. Pain in the ass but beats getting audited.

This is exactly why I stick to traditional online casinos when possible. The automatic tax forms make April so much easier.

That said, my CPA confirmed what others mentioned - crypto gambling wins are definitely taxable regardless of whether you get forms. The IRS doesn't care if the casino reported it or not, you still owe taxes on the full amount.

For anyone tracking manually, make sure you're using the Bitcoin-to-USD exchange rate from the exact moment of your win, not when you withdraw.

Wild Casino definitely doesn't send tax forms for crypto wins. Had a $4,800 Bitcoin cashout there in 2023 and got nothing in the mail.

The tricky part is calculating your cost basis correctly. If you deposited $500 in Bitcoin that appreciated to $600 by the time you won, then won another $3,000, the taxable amount gets complex. You might owe capital gains on the Bitcoin appreciation plus regular income tax on the gambling win.

Consider consulting a tax pro who understands crypto if your wins are substantial.

The lack of automatic reporting is actually one reason I prefer crypto casinos - more privacy and control over my records.

But yeah, definitely keep meticulous records. I use a crypto tax software that imports all my wallet transactions automatically. Makes it easier to separate gambling deposits/withdrawals from regular trading activity.

Just remember the IRS is getting better at tracking Bitcoin transactions, so don't think crypto wins are somehow "hidden" - they're just not automatically reported by the casino.
